A popular piece of kit in the first world war, this glass flask sits in its metal cup with the upper portion protected by a leather covering. Engraved on the front of the cup is "J. Stout, 31st Battn C.O.E.F." The only candidate that fits this is Joseph William Stout of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Born in England in June of 1887, he attested to the 31st at Medicine Hat in November of 1914. Stout served in England and France, survived the war and returned to Medicine Hat where he died in 1961. This is a smaller flask, measuring 85mm wide x 145mm tall. What appears to be a dent in the hinged top is only a reflection of the photography light.
