This first war Canadian sweetheart locket features a maple leaf and the motto "For King and Empire United We Stand". It features a prominent maple leaf and crown design, which bears resemblance to general service cap badges from that era. Inside the locket is a message that reads "God Bless and Protect You". Inside is a three pence coin bearing the image King Edward VII (and according to my old Auntie Marge, the "thru'pny Joey" was often used as a good luck coin). The back is engraved "DFS" in script. These were popular sentimental items sold during WW1 for families to keep close to their loved ones serving overseas.
