Raised in Montreal in 1862 to protect Canada from American civil war threats, the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada grew into one of the country's most celebrated infantry units, participating in the Fenian Raids and the South African War before providing three combat battalions that fought with heavy losses across the Western Front in the First World War. During the Second World War, the regiment saw intense, devastating action in Northwest Europe—most notably suffering catastrophic casualties at the Battle of Verrières Ridge during Operation Spring—and later went on to deploy personnel to the Korean War, global NATO and United Nations peace support missions, and the war in Afghanistan.
