In 1918, the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) 5th Brigade (often referred to as 5th (Corps) Wing earlier in the war, or part of larger Brigade structures) played a key role in air-ground cooperation on the Western Front, particularly during the German Spring Offensive.
During the March 1918 German Spring Offensive (Operation Michael), the 5th Wing was heavily engaged in attacking advancing ground troops, a role for which they were often under-equipped, leading to significant losses.
